WELCOME TO MALIMONO


Along the west coast of Surigao del Norte lies the Municipality of Malimono with a distance of 32 kilometers from the City. It is bounded on the north by the municipality of San Francisco, on the west by Bohol Sea, on the south by the municipality of Jabonga, Agusan del Norte and on the east by the municipalities of Sison and Mainit. 

 

The general terrain of the area is gently sloping to steeply sloping from the lowlands along the coast going to the eastern direction, which are all mountainous and thus situate 12 barangays along the coast, one of the upland and the other one is located at the foot of Can-agtiw Mountain.

 

The municipality falls under Climate type II with no pronounce dry season. Rainy season start on October, heavy rainfall will occur on December and January and it will slowly off on February. Northwest Monsoon (Amihan) will occur during rainy days from October to February while southwest Monsoon (Habagat) will visit most days of the year in the month of June until August.

 

Earthquake fault line can be found approximately five kilometers west side of the municipality, along the seawaters parallel to the shoreline leading towards Butuan City.

 

Chronological growth of population of the municipality showed that 1975 to 1980 census period has the highest increase with 3.74 growth rate. The increase of population during this period was due to the attraction of small-scale mining activities at barangyas Masgad, Cansayong, Bunyasan and Hanagdong. The 1980 to 1990 have 2.95 growth rate, however, it tremendously dropped in 1995 when this time the small-scale mining activities was fully stopped with a negative 2.6 growth rate.

 

Barangay San Isidro serves as the urban center where the seat of government is located. It is noted that there are big rural barangays compared to the urban center. The factor is attributed to the distribution of government facilities and commercial activities. Barangay Cantapoy is the most populated barangay, which is the center for agriculture and commercial fishing, barangay Masgad is the next, the center of small-scale mining before, the District Hospital is located at Barangay Doro and the tertiary school is located at Cagtina-e.

 

The gross density of the Municipality as of 1995 is 130 persons per square kilometer, which means that the area has a lower density or not densely populated. The urban center has 563 built-up density while the rural has an average of 145. Sex ratio is 1.05 or 105 males per 100 females, which means the area is predominance of male population.

 

There are 33 languages spoken by the people living in the municipality, 79.92 percent of which speaks Boholano dialect followed by Cebuano and Surigaonon, respectively.

 

The dominant religion is Roman Catholic, then Iglesia Filipina Indepeniente, third is United Church of Christ in the Philippines followed by Iglesia ni Cristo and Pentecostal Churches.

 

Literacy rate is 89 percent. Population in the labor force is 94.23 percent but most of them are self-employed or farm workers, fishermen, forest workers and vendors.

 

Malimono is a 5th class municipality.
